Iran warns it will completely close Hormuz if Trump executes threats on power plants

Iran has said it will completely shut the strategic Strait of Hormuz if United States President Donald Trump executes threats to target Iranian energy facilities.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards in a statement on Sunday said companies with US shares will be "completely destroyed" if Iranian energy facilities were targeted by Washington and energy facilities in ​countries that host ​US bases ​will be 'lawful' targets.

On Saturday, Trump threatened to "obliterate" Iran's power plants if Tehran did not ⁠fully ‌reopen the Strait of Hormuz within ‌48-hours, suggesting a significant ⁠escalation barely a day after he talked ‌about "winding down" ‌the war, now ‌in its fourth week.

Iran warned it would strike energy and water infrastructure across the Gulf if Trump follows through on his threat to attack its electricity grid, raising fears of mass disruption in a region heavily dependent on desalination for drinking water.

Trump set a Monday deadline of around 7:45 pm EDT (2345 GMT), warning late on Saturday that the United ⁠States would strike Iran’s power plants unless Tehran fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

After more ⁠than three weeks of heavy US and Israeli bombardment that officials say has sharply reduced Iran’s missile capabilities, Tehran has continued to demonstrate its ability to strike ‌back. Air raid sirens sounded across parts of northern and central Israel, including ​in Tel Aviv, and the occupied West Bank overnight on Sunday, warning of incoming missiles from Iran.
