<p>As the US-Israel led military campaign against Iran widens, US President <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> on Wednesday said he was strongly considering pulling the US out of NATO after the alliance failed to back US in its fight against Iran, reported <em>Reuters</em> quoting Trump’s interview with Britain's Daily <em>The Telegraph</em>.</p><p><br>The newspaper reported that Trump called the alliance as a "paper tiger" and said removing the US from the defence pact was now "beyond reconsideration.” </p>.Trump underestimated Iran’s resilience. Now there is only one way out of war.<p>He said he had long held doubts about NATO's credibility.</p><p><br>"Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration," Trump told the newspaper when asked about whether he would reconsider membership with NATO after the conflict, added the report. </p><p><br>"I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/putin">Putin</a> knows that too, by the way."</p> <p>NATO allies have angered Trump by collectively refusing to join the US-Israel offensive against Iran, while also rejecting his appeal to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy route that Tehran has effectively shut in response to the attacks.</p> <p>These comments came hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Washington could reassess its ties with NATO once the conflict with Iran concludes. </p> <p>Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said the military campaign in Iran could be wrapped up within two to three weeks, adding that Tehran would not necessarily need to strike a deal for the offensive to end.</p>
