A police officer in the US shot and killed an armed man near Ferguson, the place rocked by series of protests after black teenager Michael Brown was shot dead by police in August, media reported.

The incident took place late Tuesday at a gas station in the St. Louis community of Berkeley.

"The man had pointed a gun at the officer, who fired out of fear for his own life," said a police officer, CNN reported Wednesday citing St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The dead man has been identified as Antonio Martin, an 18-year-old black, according to the Huffington Post.

The officer with the City of Berkeley Police Department encountered two men during a routine check at a Mobil gas station. He got out of his squad car and approached them.

One of the men pointed a gun at the officer, who fired multiple shots at him, fatally wounding him. The second man fled.
