The Delhi University teacher, who was accused of molesting a student five months ago, has been suspended.

This decision came after the college governing body of Dyal Singh College (Evening) recommended his suspension in a meeting on Sunday.

Last week, the teacher facing molestation charges had rejoined the college after five months of medical leave. But following a complaint from a woman student, the accused was arrested and sent to judicial remand.

The principal, Dr Suman Sharma said the college governing body had discussed the teacher’s suspension in earlier meetings.

The incident, according to the victim, had taken place on November 14, 2013. Making fresh allegations, the victim had said that the teacher had threatened her to refrain from pursuing the case.

The victim said that she had taken up the case first with the college anti-sexual harassment committee and then gone to police, but the principal denies it.

Sharma said the internal complaint committee could not have acted without a formal complaint by the student. She said the student alleging molestation had only complained about teacher’s bias – relating to attendance and marks in internal assessment.

However, maintaining that the college has a mechanism in place to handle cases of sexual harassment, she said that the internal complaint committee had written to the police asking to provide inputs to the police in the case of alleged molestation.
