Punjab governor Shivraj V Patil on Monday accepted the resignation of state minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, who stepped down on “moral grounds” after a vigilance inquiry was ordered to probe the role of his former personal assistant into “misappropriation” of public funds.

Minister, Ranike, had submitted his resignation to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday, which was forwarded to the governor, an official spokesman said.

Ranike became the third minister to step down in the SAD-BJP government, which returned to power after the  Assembly polls this year.

Earlier, Bibi Jagir Kaur and Tota Singh had resigned in March and May, following their convictions in different cases.
