The first six oversized Lego bricks were laid recently for the foundation of the Lego House in Billund, the Lego Group’s hometown in Denmark.
Attending the formal ceremony were Lego matriarch Edith Kirk Kristiansen and other members of the family, who took an active part in the proceedings.
When completed in 2016, the Lego House will comprise a total floor space of 12,000 sq m, including a large covered square measuring 2,000 sq. m, and it will rise 23 metres high. The larger part of the building will be given to four play zones, showcasing some of Lego’s best ideas from the past and the present.
Designed by the well-known Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), operating from Copenhagen and New York, the architecture of the Lego House is based on the iconic shape of the Lego brick. The architects’ renderings for the structure promise a sophisticated, streamlined modern building that elevates the possibilities of Lego design.
“We have been inspired by the modularity of the Lego brick to create the Lego House. It will appear like a cloud of interlocking Lego bricks that form spaces for exploration and exhibition for its visitors within,” said BIG’s founder, Bjarke Ingels.
“On the outside, the pile of bricks form the roof of a new covered square as well as a mountain of interconnected terraces and playgrounds,” he added.
The building, which will be topped off by a gigantic Lego brick, promises a cafe, a Lego store and several roof terraces. It is hoped that it will become a destination for around 2,50,000 visitors annually.
