The Centre has asked all universities and colleges to observe Armed Forces Flag Day on campus on December 7.
In an advisory to university vice chancellors, the University Grants Commission has asked them to also organise various activities to improve awareness among the youth about the supreme sacrifices made by the armed forces' personnel to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
"The universities are requested to arrange functions/talks for the students in their colleges/institutes on the day," the Commission said.
The directive follows a request from the Department of ex-servicemen's welfare of the Ministry of Defence.
"I shall be grateful if you could kindly write to all universities to arrange functions/talks for the students in their colleges/institutes to generate awareness among the youth about the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and the significance of this day in our lives," the department's secretary Sanjeevanee Kutty said in a letter to the Commission on September 25.
