The Supreme Court on Thursday imposed a heavy cost of Rs 25 lakh on a medical college in Uttar Pradesh for continuing to admit candidates for MBBS course, despite deficiencies found by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also found that the Allahabad High Court allowed GCRC Institute of Medical Sciences to admit students, despite a direction against it.
The court said that the high court's order was against the principle of "judicial propriety" which led to "institutional problems".
The court directed the medical college to grant a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the students and refund their fees as well. The court also ordered the college to pay Rs 25 lakh as cost within eight weeks. The college was one of the 32 institutions barred by the MCI from taking admission to academic sessions of 2017-18.
The college, which had earlier approached the apex court, was allowed to withdraw its plea against MCI's decision. The college then preferred a petition before the high court, which allowed it to admit the students.
