Senior Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal on Sunday triggered a huge controversy after he allegedly called prime minister Narendra Modi a 'teli' by caste, who did not care for the interests of the trading community.

Agarwal, who was speaking as a chief guest at a meeting of the 'Vaisya' community members here, said that the prime minister did not belong to the 'bania' caste.

Agarwal's remarks were protested by a section of the participants forcing the organisers to cancel the meeting and escort the SP leader out of the venue.

BJP leaders condemned Agarwal for making such remarks and demanded an apology.
