Twelve members of a family, including four children, were killed and three others injured when the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by the Dhuri-Sirsa passenger train at an unmanned rail crossing amid dense fog in the Sarsod village of Hisar district on Monday.

The driver of the transport vehicle was among those killed, said Government Railway Police SHO (Hisar) Bhim Sein.

He said the train from Dhuri in Punjab was headed to Sirsa in Haryana when the accident occurred near the village of Sarsod, about 30 km from here.

The victims belonged to the Balak village , and were on their way to attend a religious function when the mishap took place. Low visibility due to fog is being stated as the possible reason for the mishap, said the police.

The three injured, who were also travelling in Tata Magic vehicle, have been admitted to Civil Hospital at Hisar.
