NGO Common Cause, along with a group of eminent citizens, approached the Supreme Court on Wednesday challenging the appointment of K V Chaudhary as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) and T M Bhasin as Vigilance Commissioner (VC) saying that they were not men of impeccable integrity.
The petition filed by advocate Prashant Bhushan also contended that there was “complete non-transparency” on the part of government in the appointment process of the anti-corruption watchdog.
Chaudhary was appointed as CVC on June 6, Bhasin took charge as the VC on June 11 this year after the apex court modified its restraint order . The PIL alleged that their appointments were “arbitrary, illegal and in violation of the principle of institutional integrity”. Besides, it cited alleged the role played by Chaudhary as then chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, which included frequent visits to former CBI director Ranjit Sinha’s residence here.
