Four Class XI girl students of a government school in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu were dismissed for drinking beer in their classroom during a birthday bash last Saturday.

The girls brought beer in soft drink bottles and also tried to instigate three of their classmates to join in.

The school authorities said that a teacher found the four girls in an inebriated condition in the classroom and immediately reported the matter to the principal. “We took the girls to the hospital where the blood tests confirmed that they had consumed alcohol,” a teacher said.

After informing their parents, school principal Krishnaveni formed an enquiry committee. During the probe, the four girls reportedly admitted to consuming beer. The three other students, however, pleaded that they were not guilty and were let off with a warning.

The committee also submitted its report to the principal immediately. Following the recommendation of S Gopidoss, chief educational officer, the guilty students were dismissed from the school.

“Following the recommendation from the principal of Tiruchengode government school, we have issued Transfer Certificate to the four students,” Gopidoss told Deccan Herald on Tuesday, adding that they could be readmitted if they apologise.
