The Congress on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of unleashing a divisive poll campaign after he realised that the BJP was staring at imminent defeat in the ongoing elections to five Assemblies.
With issues such as ‘kabristan’ and ‘KASAB’ becoming the highlight of the election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, Congress leader Manpreet Singh Badal said the prime minister reverted to the divisive strategy to win the election after failing the country with his ‘unimaginative economic policies’.
“The net result of the BJP’s act of deception is that in these five ongoing elections, they have no development issues to raise. The tone and tenor of the prime minister has changed. Staring at imminent defeat coupled with sheer desperation has made him unleash his divisive agenda,” Badal said.
While Modi accused the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh of discriminating on religious grounds, BJP national president Amit Shah coined the acronym ‘KASAB’ and urged voters to defeat the Congress (KA), SP (sa) and BSP (b).
Shah’s remarks triggered an outrage among political rivals, with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav making a reference to the ‘donkeys of Gujarat’. Not to be left behind, BSP supremo Mayawati urged Muslims to vote en masse for her party.
