The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Centre’s response on a host of petitions filed by mining companies and the Karnataka government, seeking review of the 2010 apex court verdict directing the State to consider within four months the pleas of companies vying for lease of iron ore mines in the Kumaraswamy range.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and H L Dattu allowed a plea of Attorney General G E Vahanvati, seeking a chance to present the Centre’s point of view in the matter. “We were never heard in the matter,” the government’s top law officer said. The bench allowing the plea posted the matter for further hearing for September 4. It also directed different parties to file their counter affidavit by then.
JSW Steel Ltd, Kalyani Steels, the Karnataka government and others had approached the apex court
with the review petitions.
