The crucial meeting of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) on December 7 is likely to decide the quantum of water to be released by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu in the month of December.
However, the CMC headed by Union Water Resources Secretary D V Singh, is unlikely to look into the release of backlog water, demanded by Tamil Nadu government.
As directed by the Supreme Court, the CMC will also spell out the quantum of water required by standing crops and for drinking water purposes in both the states during the next hearing scheduled on Monday.
Apart from consulting both the states on the storage position and requirement of crops, the CMC also sought a report from the Central Water Commission (CWC) on the ground situation in the Cauvery river basin . After compiling all the reports, the CMC will submit a forecast for the coming days to the Supreme Court, sources in the government told Deccan Herald.
The CMC meeting scheduled for November 28 was postponed after the Supreme Court began hearing the water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
“As the CMC uses the Cauvery River Water Dispute Tribunal’s interim award as the basis, it can only decide the prospective release of water by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu and not the backlog,” sources said.
