Cow smuggler held in Alwar after shootout

Police on Monday fired at a truck transporting cattle and nabbed one cow smuggler in the vehicle.

 

According to Alwar police, the people in the vehicle were the first to open fire. However, there was no casualty in the shootout.

 

"They were smuggling seven cows in the pick-up van. They fired at the police party when they saw barricading," Bhiwadi circle officer (CO) Siddhant Sharma told DH.

 

The police retaliated and caught one of the smugglers, identified as 35-year-old Umar. The others were Tahir, Haroon and Zubair.

 

A case has been registered against the four cattle transporters under the bovine act, sections of arms act, and for attempt to murder and assault on public servant.

 

This is the second such incident in Alwar in a week. In a similar incident, the police had opened fire to stop a truck in which a suspected cow smuggler was killed, while five of his accomplices escaped.

 

Alwar has been in the news for cow vigilante attacks in the past also. On November 10, the body of a 35-year-old man was found on railway tracks in Ramgarh. Police said Ummar Mohammed, a resident of Ghatmika village in Bharatpur, was killed by "anti-social elements" trying to stop cow-smuggling. His body was found near railway tracks.  

 

Earlier this year, cattle trader Pehlu Khan was lynched by suspected cow vigilantes while he was transporting cattle near Alwar.
