As tension in Golaghat district eased, authorities in Assam relaxed the indefinite curfew for 12 hours on Friday morning.

A report quoting a senior district official said curfew was relaxed in the violence hit border area since the situation is “under control and improving”.

It said no untoward incident had been reported, including in Uriamghat on Assam-Nagaland border. However, the official said security forces maintained vigil and the Army kept on stand by to prevent violent incidents.

Indefinite curfew was imposed on Golaghat on Thursday last following flare-up of violence in the border areas.

The district administration agreed to relax the curfew for four hours on Thursday and extended it further on Friday with the improving situation, the official said.

Following talks with the district administration, the seven organisations called off their protests and indefinite bandh against killing of nine persons by militants from neighbouring Nagaland and three more in the subsequent police firing.
