The Delhi government would go ahead with the tram project in the old city’s commercial section despite concerns among some traders in Chandni Chowk, government sources said.

A senior official said a meeting with Chandni Chowk traders is being fixed this week to dispel their misconceptions about the tram project, which promises to decongest and beautify the area. “No going back on the tram project, despite a section of traders being upset,” said a government functionary. Traders link action against loading and unloading of goods from trucks in the area with the tram project and remain apprehensive about it.

“An NGT order is implemented against loading and unloading of goods and some ill-informed traders are blaming it on the tram project. We will clear the misconceptions,” an AAP leader said.  Sources said AAP’s legislator for the neighbourhood Alka Lamba will be involved in the talks with the traders who needs to be convinced on the merits especially with the Public Works Department expanding the tram project.
