For a change, the donkeys of Gujarat, instead of lions, made their way into the campaigns in the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘promoting’ the donkeys of Gujarat, and asked matinee idol Amitabh Bachchan not to promote them.

“Gujarat ke log ab wahan ke gadhon ka bhi prachar karwa rahen hain. Kahin gadhon ka prachar hote dekha hai?’’ (even the donkeys of Gujarat are being promoted. Have you (people) ever seen the promotion of donkeys)?” Akhilesh said, addressing an election rally at Raebareli.

“I urge Amitabh Bachchan to stop promoting the donkeys of Gujarat,” he said, referring to the ad campaign on the Wild Ass Sanctuary in Gujarat. Akhilesh’s remarks appeared to be in response to Modi’s jibe over ‘spending public money on publicity’.
