A 21-year-old Delhi University student was killed allegedly by her lover in Model Town area, with the murder coming to light only after five days when the neighbours reported stench from his residence where he had dumped the body in a shaft.

The accused Naveen Khatri was today arrested. Police claim that on Tuesday, Khatri allegedly strangulated the woman, a final year student at Lakshmibai College under University of Delhi who was in a relationship with him.

He tried to dump the body somewhere else and also attempted to burn it once, but failed after which he threw it in a shaft as his residence in Gurmandi locality which comes under Model Town police station in northwest Delhi, police said.

During interrogation, it emerged that Khatri was to get married to someone else. The police are also probing the role of other members of the accused's family in the incident as they had apparently objected to their relationship and wanted Khatri to marry the other woman, they said.

They said several persons were questioned in the case. The matter came to light today after neighbours complained of a "terrible stench" and the police was informed, they said.

"A case of murder has been registered and the accused has been arrested. Further investigation is underway," DCP, Northwest, Vijay Singh said.
