EC issues notices to 8 newspapers

The Election Commission today issued notices to eight newspapers for allegedly publishing advertisements of various political parties without mentioning them as such at the bottom or the name of the sponsoring party.

Disclosing this here today, Usha Sharma, Special Chief Electoral Officer Punjab, said it had already been conveyed to all media organisations to follow the EC guidelines strictly, especially during election time and any violation of those guidelines would be dealt with severely.

The EC did not reveal the names of the newspapers to whom notices have been sent, but sources said that they are published from here and elsewhere in Punjab.

She said that meanwhile observers both expenditure and general observers have started arriving in various constituencies and all ROs have been issued instructions to provide total support to the observers in the discharge of their duties.

They have been asked to publicise the name and contact numbers of the observers so that general public and political parties could approach them without any hindrance.

Focusing on check of illicit liquor, all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been instructed to raid such dens and destroy the liquor seized during the raid.

They were asked to focus on those areas known for illicit distillation and keep a watch in these areas so that they do not again come into business after raids.

Stressing on check of flow of black money, SSPs have been asked to randomly check the vehicles of the candidates, all government vehicles as well as security vehicles.

The Commission has received 1275 complaints regarding violation of model code of conduct from across the state out of which 605 have been disposed off.

A notice has been issued to Congress MP Mohinder Singh for holding a public meeting without permission in Jalandhar West.

Besides, the CEO has sought a report regarding the political gathering by SAD candidate Ajit Singh Kohar in Dana Mandi at Shahkot.

The Static Surveillance teams have seized unaccounted money totalling Rs 18.84 crore.
