Karim Rehman Mohammed, a technician with Kuwaiti flagship vessel 'Al Mirqab', was given these booklets and pamphlets, written in Hindi, free of cost by a religious centre in Egypt, they said.
The 25-year-old has been booked under IPC Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Purushottam Karad told PTI.
"He distributed the pamphlets to the personnel at the JNPT after the cargo ship docked at the port. These booklets promote Islam, but also carry certain things that are against the Hindu community," Karad said.
"The booklets claim Islam is better than any other religion and people should convert to it leaving other religions, including Hinduism," the DCP added.A security man, who spotted him distributing the pamphlets, brought this to the notice of police following which Karim was questioned, he said.
The cargo vessel, steered by a Pakistani captain, Sayed Hader, set sail from UAE shores on November 5, and via Karachi port, arrived at JNPT yesterday.
