FIR against Geelani over Guru event

The Delhi Police on Friday named former Delhi University professor S A R Geelani in a case registered over an event organised at the Press Club of India (PCI) here in which slogans were shouted, hailing 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

On Thursday, an FIR was also lodged over a similar event organised at Jawaharlal National University in south Delhi.

The latest FIR was filed with Parliament Street police station on Friday. The charges are under sections 124-A (sedition), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code. According to police, the case was registered after taking suo motu cognisance of media reports.

“We have also received a complaint from PCI. Geelani has been summoned to join investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal. Geelani was acquitted in the 2001 Parliament attack case.
