A 20-year-old man was shot dead and another injured when two gangs clashed at Shakti Garden in northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area on Monday evening.

The gangs, headed by Gaurav and Sudesh, ran a racket of stealing electricity and supplying it to local residents. Gaurav died in the clash while another named Ajay was injured.

Local resident Sudesh and a person named Monty have been arrested. Sudesh used to sell power to people on one side of the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, said police.

Loni resident Gaurav used to work for Sudesh until recently. He broke off to form his own group. His gang too began operating in the same area.

“As the gangs started stepping on each other’s toes, a clash erupted on Monday evening and both sides started pelting stones at each other,” said a police officer.

Amidst the stone-throwing, some bullets were fired, police said. Gaurav was hit in the chest and Ajay in the leg.

Gaurav died in the hospital while being operated upon. Police handed over his body to relatives after the post-mortem.

A case of murder has been registered at Jyoti Nagar police station. Sudesh and Monty are being interrogated.

Police are also planning to question other members of both the gangs to probe further, including their modus operandi.
