Heavy rain under the impact of a low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal, lashed many parts of Odisha including Bhubaneswar on Sunday, bringing in the much-awaited relief to the people reeling under intense heat wave for the last several days. The rainfall will continue for the next two days.
According to the daily bulletin released by the local weather office, Balasore district received maximum 96 mm of rainfall on Sunday followed by Bhubaneswar (91.4 mm), Cuttack (71.6 mm) and temple town of Puri (58 mm). “Rain will occur in the entire state during the next 48 hours under the impact of the low pressure.
However, the rainfall will be heavy to very heavy in the entire coastal belt, as well as in some districts in north Odisha”, the statement released by the met department on Sunday evening said.
The warning from the weather office has prompted the state’s special relief commissioner (SRC) to direct the collectors of six districts to remain alert for flash floods.
These districts are — Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Keonjhar in north Odisha and Dhenkanal and Jajpur in the coastal belt.
With rain, the maximum day-time temperature has come down drastically across the state.
On Sunday, Titlagarh in western Odisha Bolangir district recorded maximum 38 degree Celsius followed by Malkangiri in south Odisha (37 degree) and Jharsuguda in western Odisha (35.4 degree). Just two days back, as many as 15 towns in the state had recorded maximum temperature of 40 degree Celsius and more.
In some places, mercury had even touched 45 degree Celsius.
