To assist the pilgrims from Karnataka stranded in Uttarakhand due to cloud burst and landslips, the State government has sent a special team to coordinate rescue and relief work. It has also opened Karnataka Disaster Management Centre at the Secretariat House, Subhash Road, Dehradun.
The State government has deputed Deputy Commissioner for Social Welfare, Naveen Raj Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Internal Security) Hemanth Nimbalkar and Deputy Director of Mines and Geology department Kari Gowda to Uttarakhand.
“We have sent senior officials to coordinate the rescue operations and evacuate people from our state, most of whom were on a Char Dham pilgrimage. The rescued pilgrims will be airlifted to New Delhi for any medical emergency and, from there, they will be sent to Karnataka,” Home Minister KJ George said.
Speaking to Deccan Herald from Dehradun, Nimbalkar said: “As of now, we have identified and contacted over 205 people and have confirmed that they have been rescued and lodged at different camps.”
Initially, the Karnataka Tourism department identified nine people who were stranded in Uttarkhand. They were identified as Venkataramana Mogera, Jagadeesh Mesta, Krishnakumar Shet, Prahalad Bhat, Krishna Mirasi, Raghavendra Suresh Bhat, Nithin Ramadas and Sooraj Suresh Shanabagh.
