The state government's flagship Bengaluru Dr B R Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE) will be developed as a university, with the Legislative Assembly passing a Bill to that effect on Thursday.

The Congress government started BASE last year as an autonomous institution on the lines of the London School of Economics. As a university, BASE can award degrees in its own name and also receive funds from the University Grants Commission.

A total of 50 students, selected through a common entrance test, form the first batch of BASE.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had flagged off the academic session October last.  Piloting the Bengaluru Dr B R Ambedkar School of Economics University Bill, 2018, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddi said the university will function as an institution of excellence in the areas of economics and other social sciences "as existing institutions have not been able to meet the increasing complexity of growth and development in these subjects."

The government is expected to spend Rs 250 crore to convert BASE into a university. The Legislative Council is yet to pass the Bill.

The Karnataka Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill, 2018, was passed in the Legislative Assembly, to extend the cut-off date for regularisation of unauthorised constructions of certain lands.
