4 B'loreans win Bhatnagar awards

Eleven scientists, including four Bangaloreans, have been selected for the 2012 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award for their valuable contributions to scientific research.

Three scientists from Indian Institute of Science – Govindasamy Mugesh, Ravishankar Narayanan and Arindam Ghosh — bagged the award. The fourth person from Bangalore is Siva Ramachandran Athreya who researches at the Indian Statistical Institute.

Delhi-based scientists Shantanu Chowdhury from Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology and Suman Kumar Dhar from Jawaharlal Nehru University, too, are among the recipients of the award.

Two Kolkata-based researchers – Krishnendu Sengupta from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science and Debashish Goswami at ISI – bagged the award.

The remaining three are Sandip Basu from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, Y Shanthi Pavan from Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai and Gangadhar Sanjayan from National Chemical Laboratory in Pune.

All the recipients will each receive a cash award of Rs 5 lakh besides Rs 15,000 every month for the rest their service lives if they continue to work in the government. The awards will be presented to them later.
