A 76-year-old retired bank manager committed suicide by jumping off the ninth floor of his apartment on Bannerghatta Road in the early hours of Monday.

The police said that the deceased is Ashok Mallapur, a native of Karwar. He was working in a bank in Maharashtra and had retired as a manager. He had been living with his wife at Poorva Heights apartment complex since 2009. Their daughter and son-in-law were living in the same complex in a different block. Around 4.30 am, Mallapur went to the balcony of the flat and jumped to death. Security guards heard a loud noise, and on checking, found Mallapur lying in a pool of blood. They informed the family members and shifted him to a nearby private hospital where he was declared brought dead, said the police.

The Mico Layout police, who were informed, visited the spot and said he might have taken the extreme step due to old age and also suspected he had been suffering from depression. But the actual reason is yet to be ascertained, added the police.

A case has been registered at Mico Layout police station.
