The BBMP issued notices to the slum dwellers of Subramanyapura lake on Wednesday, asking them to vacate the place.

This is part of the civic body's effort to clear the lake of encroachments. The notices have  been issued to about 30 slum dwellers and they have been asked to vacate the place in two days.

"We will not move from this place. They have pasted the notices on the doors of houses which were closed, but we will not go anywhere," said the residents.

A senior BBMP official said, “We have provided flats built by the Slum Development Authority to these people. Even then, these residents are not ready to vacate.”

“We have taken up a project to revive the lake at a cost of Rs 3 crore. This lake was neglected for the last 10 years. We will see to it that the sewage water does not enter the lake. We will build a pathway along the lake for visitors to walk. These houses, situated in the middle of the lake, have been coming in the way of our work,” he said.

Uttarahalli corporator Hanumantaiah said, "The houses built for the slum dwellers do not have electricity connections or a proper drainage system. They have not even given occupancy letters to the residents. This is why they are refusing to move into the houses."
