In a huge relief to first year degree students who had cleared their pre-university course (PUC) in private, Bangalore University on Wednesday assured them that their admission to degree courses as full-time scholars will not be declared invalid.
However, this is only a one-time gesture to bail out students of the current academic year.
Aggrieved students requested university officials on Wednesday and said their admission to formal degree courses this year be formalised as they had already joined colleges. There was uncertainty regarding these students' admissions as the university recently decided that private candidates would not be allowed to pursue degree courses as regular scholars.
It was argued that such students do not meet the “10+2” criterion as they would have appeared for examination after completing only for one year of pre-university unlike regular scholars who have to complete two years.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, a student studying in a private degree college at Yelahanka in the city said: “We were really tense. We met the university officials again today, requesting them to formalise our admissions.
They have assured the students that this year they will not cancel our admissions.”
However, the university has specifically told them that the arrangement will be valid only this year.
The officials have also told the students to spread the message to their friends who may want to appear for PUC in private that such candidates will not be admitted in BU-affiliated degree colleges from next year.
