The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested a career thief and recovered valuables worth several lakhs of rupees.
The suspect, John Melwyn alias Kariya, 40, is involved in more than 40 house burglaries, the police said. Gold and silver ornaments, worth Rs 14.5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh in cash were recovered from him.
A ganja addict, Melwyn led a lavish lifestyle and spent the stolen money on prostitutes.
On July 21, the Magadi Road police arrested him and sent him to jail, but he was out on bail within a few days and burgled a house in Vijayanagar police limits.
He was arrested again some days ago while moving around suspiciously and he confessed to burgling the house in Vijayanagar.
Of the 47 cases of house burglary against him, Melway has been acquitted in 40 cases, the police said.
