To make Cubbon Park more than just a lung space and attract more visitors, the horticulture department is creating shade gardens.
The department is also landscaping some parts of the prime lung space on the lines of the one near the Kempegowda International Airport.
This is the first time the Horticulture department has initiated such work. “We are creating a shade garden near Queen and King Edward statues in the European style. From Hudson Circle to State Central Library, we will plant royal palm trees and in the two- to three-metre area on either side of the road, landscaping on the lines of that at the international airport is being done. Shade gardens are also being created near the Hudson Circle gate and another location,” Mahantesh Murgod, deputy director, Horticulture, Cubbon Park said.
He clarified that for these works, no trees will be cut, but weeds will be cleared. The areas which have been chosen were not developed and needed improvement, he
said.
“We are adding grass, shrubs, ornamental and small plants which do not need much sunlight. We are investing Rs 2 crore for this. We are introducing more soil and fertilisers to help the plants grow. Work started five days back and will →months. The idea is to ensure cleanliness in Cubbon Park, prevent nuisance, increase greenery and the landscape,” he added.
