The High Court on Monday orally suggested Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) not to allow nonsporting activities at National College grounds in Basavanagudi.

A division bench comprising S K Mukherjee and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar ordered notice to the state government, the BBMP commissioner and the City Police Commissioner in response to a petition filed by Shankarpuram Residents’ Welfare Association, seeking directions to the Palike not to grant permission to hold any nonsporting event at the ground.

The petitioner had contended that whenever there was a non-sporting event at the grounds, residents faced a threat to safety and security of their life and property. The events also caused traffic problems, besides noise and air pollution. They also contended that the absence of toilets led to open urination and defecation in the area during the events and the past incidents of tear-gas shelling, lathi charge and law and order problems affected them.
