The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday dismissed a PIL seeking directions to allow Ganesha idols made of Plaster of Paris (POP) and painted idols to be allowed to be immersed in places identified by the BBMP.

The petitioner, Bengaluru Mahanagara Ganesh Utsava, had challenged the notice of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board which had imposed a ban on use of POP idols and painted idols. The board had issued directions to take possession of unsold idols made of POP, shred them and send them to landfills.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar, dismissed the PIL stating that the decision of BBMP to ban POP and painted idols is correct as such idols affect the lakes and the environment.
