The devotional and romantic notes of different thumris will lure Delhiites this monsoon. The mellifluous notes of traditional songs which will be rendered by stalwarts like Shubha Mudgal, Vidushi Girija Devi, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty and Malini Awasthi promise to celebrate the spirit of thumri over a two-day festival beginning 13 August.
Thumri is said to have originated as a form of music associated with Lord Krishna’s raas leela. Over the past decades the generic style of thumri has gained immense popularity amongst a varied audience that has enjoyed its odes to nature and love.
The names of performing artists bring a smile to the faces of music lovers who are gearing up to listen to all of them.
In its effort to revive thumri, which has lost its gleam because it has always been considered a sub-genre of Hindustani classical music rather a full fledged form of Purab Ang Gayaki, the Sahitya Kala Parishad along with Department of Art, Culture and Languages is organising this event.
The festival begins with a performance by noted virtuoso Shubha Mudgal and eminent Bengali vocalist Pt Ajoy Chakraborty while second day will witness performances by the most celebrated exponent of thumri today, vidushi Girija Devi and her disciple Malini Awasthi.
“I feel great to be a part of such a rich festival. The weather is beautiful and this form of music is a celebration for rain. It gives us performers a boost to see that people are interested in classical music and wait for such cultural evenings.
“It is also an honour for me to be part of this festival because I will get an opportunity to perform on the same day as my guruji Girijaji.
The festival will be held on August 13 and 14 at Kamani Auditorium from 6.30 pm.
