Talghattapura police seized 406 gold bangles from a man during a random check of vehicles at the Tataguni checkpost on the City outskirts in the early hours of Tuesday.

The bangles weigh 4.4 kg and are valued at Rs 1.5 crore.

The police stopped a car at 3:30 am and spotted a bag stacked with gold bangles of different shapes and sizes inside it. Guru Singh, 26, the driver of the car, was arrested when he failed to produce relevant documents for the jewellery.

During interrogation, he said he was a native of Rajasthan and a resident of Chennai. He claimed he was a wholesale manufacturer of gold ornaments and that he had brought the bangles to market them to jewellers in Bangalore and seek orders for bulk production.

Talaghattapura police said prima facie, the material did not look like inducements for voters. However, a case has been registered against Singh under Section 102 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
