The Soladevanahalli police on Monday arrested a 27-year-old man for the murder of a young couple who had married against their parents’ wishes. The suspect has been identified as Hanumantharayappa, brother of deceased woman, Kasturi.

The police said that Kasturi and Basavaraju, both from Koppal, had been courting each other since school days. After her marriage to another man Kasturi had eloped with Basavaraju two months ago and the couple had settled in Vinayakanagar at Hesaraghatta. They were found brutally murdered in the house on Sunday.

The owner of the house and neighbours had given vital clues to the police about the presence of Hanumantharayappa at the house on Sunday. The police tracked down Hanumntharayappa at one of his relative's house in Doddaballapura.

Police said that Hanumantharayappa was humiliated after Kasturi eloped with Basavaraju. He decided to take revenge and went to her house in Vinayakanagar. “Initially, he tried to convince Basavaraju to leave his sister. However, when the couple refused to do so, Basavaraju killed them when they were asleep,” a police officer said.
