A pile-up involving seven vehicles resulted in the death of a 45-year-old insurance company employee, and also caused massive congestion in and around Electronics City on Tuesday afternoon.
A speeding truck lost control when several vehicles were waiting at a traffic signal at Veerasandra Industrial Estate on NH-7. The driver of the Tamil Nadu-registered truck, Udaya Surayan, suddenly applied brakes as he approached the busy junction, but he rear-ended a lorry, which in turn rammed into a goods vehicle and a van.
Vishwanath Hegde, a two-wheeler rider, was tossed into the air when the van hit his vehicle. He suffered severe injuries when he fell to the ground. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Hegde was a resident of Kacharakanahalli. Four people — Murgesh (45), Moin Khan (20), Syed Mehboob (20) and Sadashiva (45) — who sustained injuries, were also rushed to hospital.
While Murgesh was in the goods vehicle, the other three were sitting inside the van.
Surayan’s friends shifted him to a hospital in Hosur, said the police.
A mini goods vehicle, a van, two bikes and three cars were damaged in the accident, which led to disruption in vehicular movement on Electronics City Main Road and surrounding areas for over an hour. Many local residents also gathered at the spot.
“A total of seven vehicles were involved in the accident. There was a huge traffic jam for over one hour. The police deployed additional men and cleared the vehicles, facilitating smooth flow,” DCP (Traffic-East) Babu Rajendra Prasad told Deccan Herald.
The police have booked the driver under IPC Section 304 A (causing death by negligence). A police team will go to Hosur and arrest him once he recovers, said the police.
