Hundreds of medical students took part in a protest on Tuesday against the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill.
"We strongly protest this unilateral and undemocratic move of the Union Government," said Dr Sudha, the president of the Medical Service Centre. In her view, the proposed commission would be an undemocratic and bureaucratic body as all its members would be nominated. The Central government will have a direct bureaucratic control over the commission, curtailing its autonomy and democracy, she added.
V N Rajashekar, president, All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO), said: "As per the NMC Bill, massive changes in medical education, including exam systems, will take place that will be detrimental to the interests of medical students, doctors and people as a whole."
