MES engineers held on charges of graft

The CBI on Thursday arrested two engineers of Military Engineer Services (MES) on charges of graft.  The arrested are - Lt Colonel Jesweer Singh B, a garrison engineer, and Chowhan, an assistant garrison engineer, both working at MES, Karwar.

The complainant, a civil contractor, stated that  the officials demanded Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively, for clearing the pending bills and the payments. The complainant had executed civil works on the  MES premises.

It was stated that as first instalment, the accused officials had respectively demanded Rs 50,000 in the form of gold and cash. The CBI laid a trap and Jesweer Singh was caught red-handed while accepting 30 gold coins, weighing 15 gm and a single malt Scotch whiskey bottle and the assistant garrison engineer was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 50,000 from the complainant.  Searches are being conducted on the premises of the accused officials. The officials will be produced before the competent court, an official said.
