Now, digital door number to locate properties

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a digital door numbering system where every residential and commercial property in the city can be identified with a seven-digit number.

The project, named DiGi7, puts an end to the long address system involving the name of the street and locality and makes it easy for people to identify properties. The seven-digit number is alpha-numeric in character and helps locate properties on Google Maps. DiGi7 will help accurately locate an address as the code is attached with latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates.

BBMP has divided the entire city into main grids and further into micro grids. The seven-digit number comprises, in the following order: a three-digit number indicating the main grid, one alphabet indicating the sub-grid, two more alphabets to indicate the micro-grid and a number at the end to indicate the number of properties within the micro grid. Apartments with multiple houses will have sub-numbers in the end to indicate a particular flat.

"DiGi7 mainly helps in locating properties with ease. This is a move to bring property owners into the tax net. We can take action against them if they evade tax since we will have a database of  the number of properties in the city," said BBMP
commissioner N Manjunath Prasad.

As of now, all BBMP properties coming under GIS-Enabled Property Tax Information System (GEPTIS) will have digital door numbers. There are 19 lakh such properties in the city.

However, areas which are still  under the Bangalore Development
Authority (BDA) will get their numbers in the second phase, said Prasad.

Bangalore Development and Town Planning Minister K J George, Mayor R Sampath Raj and additional chief secretary, Urban Development Department, Mahendra Jain, were present at the launch on Thursday.

It is a digital identification number which has GPS co-ordinates for the property. This is a permanent number and is allotted to a plot and does not change even if the owner of the property changes.

Why is it important?
This system replaces the conventional system of long addresses. Also, it is much easier to identify properties. Owners can also display their numbers on their properties.

How to get digital  number?

One can download the DiGi7 app on both Android and iPhone. One can also obtain the number by sending an SMS to 161. The request through SMS should be as follows: BBMP PID send to 161.

People can share this number through WhatsApp, Gmail and on other social media platforms so that it becomes easy to navigate with the help of Google Maps.

Drawbacks in app

The app does not provide details on how to use it or why it is helpful. Also, one must know the Property Identification Digit (PID) number of their property to get the digital number.
