Mysuru Police Commissioner Dr A Subramanyeshwar Rao has ordered a probe against Devaraja police personnel for “torturing” a man and keeping him under “illegal custody by chaining him”.

Devaraja Police “tortured and harassed” Girish, 26 a resident of Kumbara Koppal, said his family members. Police had taken Girish into custody in connection with a theft case on March 18 and had kept him in custody in the station. Police, however, said that they had detained Girish because he had confessed to the crime and was thus kept in custody till he returned the stolen money.

Girish, an employee at Garuda Mall in the city, was taken into custody based on a complaint by a woman that her vanity bag was  stolen during her visit to the mall on March 6.

Girish’s family members alleged that the police had kept him in their custody for four days and released him on Tuesday evening after they paid some money.

The Commissioner said that a team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) H T Shekar will look into the matter.
