Police have booked the management of Max Muller Public School and a staffer of an event management agency for negligence in ensuring safety at the stage that was installed for the school’s annual day celebrations at the Dr B R Ambedkar Stadium in Basaveshwaranagar on Saturday night.
Six students and two teachers were injured after the gantry fell on the stage while a dance performance was going on.
“We have booked the school management and the person who was assigned the responsibility of the stage and other tasks. We are questioning the office-bearers and the other person, who is a resident of Vijayanagar,” said a senior police officer. Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC has been invoked.
Meanwhile, five of the injured people have been discharged. Three others, including a female teacher, are being treated in different hospitals. The teacher, Pinku alias Pinky, has fractured her shoulder. Harshitha, 14, a class 9 student, who fractured her thigh, is being treated at Hosmat Hospital. Munesh, a II PU student who was sitting close to the stage, is undergoing treatment at Shanbhag Hospital in Basaveshwaranagar. Harshitha was assisting Pinku when the gantry fell on the stage.
The student has suffered a fracture on her right thigh bone and would undergo surgery on Monday, said Dr Ajit Benedict Royan, medical director, Hosmat Hospital. “Her femur bone has been fractured. She will undergo a surgery where we will put insertions and treat her,” he added.
The incident had occurred around 10.45 pm when 50-odd students were performing a dance from Kannada film ‘Mr Airavata’. Though the annual day event was scheduled for 6 pm, it got delayed. The staff had lined up about 35 dance performances by children. Five performances were yet to happen when the gantry fell down.
