This is a class photograph taken in 1985 during my first year of degree at Smt VHD Central Institute of Home Science. It was a yearly practice for different batches to take a group photo. This particular picture has three classes combined. I was in the Physics, Math and Home Science class - there were just nine of us in the class.

My college days were one of the best I’ve had. It was a great course as well. During our second year, we had the child development class and we taught the students at the playschool in the campus. We conducted various activities for them; I learnt a lot during that time.

I’m happy to say that I am still in touch with most of my classmates. My best friends were Hema and Hemalatha.

We had a great time together; we were always active in class and would often roam around somewhere near the college once the classes are over. Unlike today, we didn’t have any malls to go to. So it was usually the ‘bhel puri’ stall we used to haunt. Since we were a small number in school, the idea of ‘mass bunk’ didn’t really exist. But if we did decide to do something like that, we all hung out together.

We used to go over to each other’s houses for lunch too. If exams are approaching, we would have group studies after class. It was such a carefree time back then.

Weekends were all about spending time with our respective families. My dad used to take us for movies and for ‘kulfi’. We used to stay near Chickpet. The roads used to be playgrounds for us.

Now it’s become too commercialised and there is hardly any place to walk!

Public transport was widely used then. We were a lot more independent; there was no one to pick and drop us to school and college. But today, the parents have to either look for school bus or drop them personally to the location.

I miss the old Bengaluru weather as well. My friends and I would eagerly wait for the rain after college and walk home drenched. Now it’s so dirty and the rain feels different too.

Times have changed but my memories still remain fresh. I hope my friends are happy and I want them to know that I cherish the memories we shared.
