Congress MLA K B Koliwad (in pic) said he would not resign as chairman of the Legislative Assembly committee probing tank encroachments even after he becomes the Assembly Speaker.

Koliwad also told reporters in Bengaluru, “If I wanted to, I could have resigned from the post. But I am eager to complete the report on lake encroachments in Bengaluru and submit it. This report will be historical,” he added.

He said the process to get him elected to the post of Legislative Assembly Speaker has been initiated. The state Cabinet is yet to approve the proposal and send it to the Governor, who will then issue a notification.

Koliwad said that if there is a delay in conducting elections, then pro tem Speaker Shivashanakara Reddy would preside over the legislature session for a day or two. The session is scheduled to start on July 4.

Koliwad said his style of functioning as Speaker would differ from that of his predecessor Kagodu Thimmappa. “Each one has a different style of functioning. But my main objective is to take both the ruling and opposition parties into confidence, so that time is not wasted. I have also decided to give the opposition members more time to highlight people’s issues,” he added.
