The City police, along with Amnesty International, launched the ‘Bengaluru, Get Ready to Report’ campaign on the premises of the Ashok Nagar police station on Saturday.
The initiative – to help women in the City to report sexual violence – was inaugurated by Police Commissioner M N Reddi.
Speaking at the inauguration, Reddi said, “Our prime aim is to protect women and make sure they stay safe in our City. Through this initiative, we want the women of our society to come forward and report the problems they face in their daily lives. Only when they come forward and report crimes against them, the police will be able to take stringent action against the perpetrators.”
A virtual FIR kiosk was set up at the Ashok Nagar police station. The virtual equipment, which can be worn as glasses, gives a simulated experience of being inside a police station. It also shows the various parts of the police station and explains the step-by-step process of filing a first information report (FIR) in both Kannada and English language. The kiosk will be set up across various parts of the City, which will help educate people.
For now, Yeshwantpur, Chickpet, Cubbon Park, Ashok Nagar, Sadashiva Nagar, Indira Nagar, Electronics City, Basavanagudi, Whitefield and Indiranagar police stations will be part of the initiative.
In the coming years, every police station in the City will become part of the initiative, said the members of Amnesty International.
Manavi Kumar, who witnessed the inauguration, said, “It is a good move which will help several women who hesitate to come out in the open and talk about the harassment they are going through. Also, it gives us an idea of how to file an FIR. Such initiatives are important for the women at this point in time.”
