The Centre will write to chief ministers of all states on the “new formula” over setting up of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said in Bangalore on Friday.
Replying to queries from reporters after chairing a meeting of Southern Zonal Council, Shinde said while he would personally write to all chief ministers on the need to expedite the setting up of NCTC, the union home secretary will write to chief secretaries of all states.
Following opposition by several non-Congress ruled states, the Centre, among others, had arrived at a compromise formula bestowing powers to arrest and conduct operations jointly with the state police and the NCTC. Shinde reiterated that the Centre has information that terror groups have been investing money in Indian stock markets.
The minister said he had spoken at a recent Interpol meeting in Rome that the Government of India had information that some terror groups were engaged in such activities. However, Shinde said he would not be able to name the groups involved.
On fresh violence in Assam, Shinde said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had spoken to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. “The Cental government is assisting the state. The situation is coming under control.
The number of people in transit camps in Assam has come down from five lakh earlier this year to 24,000 today,” Shinde said.
