More than 300 fish have died in the Potoli village tank in the last couple of days, raising concerns among local residents. Potoli comes under the Nagoda gram panchayat in the taluk.

It is said immersion of Ganesha idols, as many as eight in the last few days, following the festival and the resultant water pollution is causing the death of fish and stench, much to the discomfort of the residents. The people want the authorities to find out whether the idol immersion or some other cause like a contagious disease is responsible for the fishkill.

The tank, spread over an area of three acres, is the chief source of drinking water for residents and livestock in the village. The authorities have begun clearing the dead fish floating in the waterbody. Only a few fish are alive in the lake.

Revenue department and fisheries department officials visited the spot. The fisheries department officials have taken samples of the water and the dead fish for tests.
