The High Court on Friday issued emergent notices to Sandur MLA E Tukaram, his wife E Annapurna and the Deputy Commissioner of Bellary in a case pertaining to misuse of public land.

A few residents of Sandur approached the High Court filing a PIL, after the MLA apparently purchased a land measuring one acre and 30 guntas in the name of his wife to construct a house. The petitioners contended that the land was meant for developing a park and a community hall.

They alleged that Tukaram got the site in his wife’s name illegally and obtained a building licence from the Municipal Council.

A Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen also issued notices to Bellary Urban Development Authority and Vijayanagar Area Development Authority of Torangal. According to the petitioners, the two local bodies had stated that the land should be used only for building community halls, park or as parking space.
